Dark Marks on Clothing Are Not All the Same Thing

Mould, rust, oil, ink, blood and washing-machine residue all appear on fabric as dark spots, but the treatments contradict each other — and the wrong one will set the stain permanently. This guide gives three ways to identify the source (appearance, smell, position), then sets out the steps for each.

Second and Third Clues: Smell and Position for when appearance alone is not enough

  • Smell

    Smell almost settles it

    • Musty — close, damp, earthy — is almost certainly mould.
    • Greasy and rancid means machine or cooking oil.
    • Coloured but odourless points to ink, rust, or dye transfer.
  • Locate

    Position points to cause

    • Seams, folds and underarms are more likely mould.
    • The chest and sleeves suggest food oil or ink.
    • Spread evenly over the whole garment means transfer from the machine.

Mould: Remove It Physically First, Then Chemically the general procedure

  • Take the garment outdoors and brush the spots gently, so spores are not spread indoors.
  • Leave it in sunlight for two to three hours to kill the mould first.
  • Choose a treatment by fabric and colour — see the two tables below.
  • After washing, dry it completely, or the mould returns.

Folk remedies

A mixture of toothpaste, salt, white vinegar, washing powder and warm water, soaked for five minutes and then rubbed, works on mould in cotton. Mung bean sprouts contain compounds that break mould down, and can be rubbed into the spots before rinsing. These are traditional remedies rather than the tested treatments in the tables above, and no standardised testing is known for them.

Rust: Use Acid, Never Bleach the mark most often treated with the wrong thing

Rust must not be treated with ordinary bleach — what dissolves iron oxide is acid. This is the single most important prohibition in this guide: chlorine bleach on rust is not merely useless, it can fix the stain in place.

  • Hydrogen peroxideApply directly to the mark and brush gently; bicarbonate of soda strengthens it.
  • White vinegar and saltMix to a paste, apply, leave four to six hours, then rinse. Good for heavy fabrics.
  • Oxalic acidDissolves iron oxide effectively; suited to old, stubborn rust.
  • Fresh tomato juiceContains oxalic and citric acids. Apply, leave 20 minutes; suitable for coloured fabric.

Oil: The Sooner the Better once dry it works into the fibre

  • Blot the surface oil with paper towel — press, do not rub, or it spreads.
  • Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda to absorb what remains, wait a few minutes, brush off.
  • Apply a neutral washing-up liquid, which breaks down fat, and work it in gently.
  • Rinse at around 40 °C, then wash normally.
  • For machine oil, recognisable by its petrol-like smell, dissolve it first with petroleum spirit.

Ink and Blood their temperature requirements are opposite

  • Ink or ballpoint pen

    Move the ink out with alcohol

    • Put paper towel underneath, apply surgical spirit, and dab with a cotton bud so the ink transfers into the towel.
    • For hardened pen marks, soften with glycerine first, then spray with alcohol and blot dry.
  • Blood, which is protein

    Cold water only

    heat coagulates the protein

    • Hot water sets the stain permanently — rinse at once with plenty of cold water.
    • If anything remains, press hydrogen peroxide onto it with a cotton bud.
    • Rinse thoroughly, then wash as usual.

Marks That Appear Only After Washing: It Is the Machine clean the machine before the clothes

  • Dissolve 120 g of sodium percarbonate in three litres of warm water and pour it in.
  • Run at the highest water level for 15 minutes, pause, and leave it to stand for 3 to 11 hours.
  • Run it again, skim off the black debris that surfaces, and drain.
  • Run one or two empty cycles with a clean towel inside to pick up what is left.
  • Clean it monthly, and leave the door open afterwards so it dries.

Three rules that must not be swapped

Acid for rust, never bleach. Cold water for blood, never hot. Treat oil while it is still wet, never after it dries. Each rule corresponds to a specific chemical or physical mechanism, and getting any of them the wrong way round does not merely fail to clean — it fixes the stain.
